of the Centre François Viète

The Centre François Viète (CFV) of epistemology and of the history of science and technology (UR 1161) was founded in Nantes Université in 1994. This interdisciplinary research unit is made of researchers working on epistemology and on the history of mathematics, of earth and space sciences, of physics and chemistry, of life and medicine science, as well as the history and philosophy of technology.

Nowadays, the CFV covers an inter-regional geographical area. Indeed, its members belong to the universities of Nantes, Angers, Le Mans, Caen and Brest. A branch of CFV was officially introduced at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale on January 1st, 2012. The CFV now includes two sites: Nantes Université,main site, and the Université de Bretagne Occidentale, secondary site.

At Nantes Université, the CFV is under the double supervision of the Faculty of Science and Technology (UFR Sciences et Techniques) and of the Faculty of Letters and Languages (UFR Lettres et Langages). At the Université de Bretagne Occidentale, it is under the supervision of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities (UFR Lettres et Sciences Humaines) and is a member of the research federation Institut Supérieur de l'Homme et de la Société at UBO and the MSHB.
